Update: President Biden’s CHIPS Act in Action

This week saw new movement around U.S. President Biden’s CHIPS Act as the program launched. This has already set off an investment boom with top investors already sharing plans to expand manufacturing in the U.S. Even as semiconductor production increases, experts are still unsure if this will be enough to put the States back in the lead for manufacturing. Roughly 10% of the global supply of semiconductors can be attributed to the U.S. Meanwhile, 75% is credited to countries in East Asia. Additionally, the most advanced chips are not mass-produced in the U.S., with Taiwan leading in that field holding 85% of the market and South Korea claiming the remaining 15%.

It remains to be seen how the legislation will impact the semiconductor industry, but we expect many changes over the coming months.
