SHORTAGE ALERT

Shortage Alert: Silicone Fab Fire and Explosion

A fire and explosion at a silicone fab in China could further threaten polysilicon supply and exacerbate shortages impacting the solar industry. The incident happened earlier in the week at Hoshine Silicon’s ‘997 siloxane’ facility, as reported by Data Centre Dynamics Ltd.

Closure for safety inspections and the investigation could prolong the shortage of polysilicon. The shortage, initially caused by factory shutdowns during the pandemic, has intensified by an uptick in solar panel demand.

Datacenter Dynamics Editor, Sebastian Moss, states, “These supply constraints come as solar capacity expands dramatically around the world, for private citizens, utilities, and large corporations.” Moss adds, “Data center companies have turned to large solar farms to help offset their huge energy requirements.”
