Move Over AS6081! Embracing AS6171: The Future of Quality Standards in DoD Contracts

An Interview with Mark Baldyga, High-Reliability Quality Director

Mark BaldygaQuality standards for the electronics industry are a vital part of managing the supply chain and ensuring products function properly, are authentic, and are verified. We spoke with Converge’s Director of High-Reliability, Mark Baldyga, on the quality standards used today and how this year will be a big transition for customers who are now required by the DoD and others to follow AS6171 to test and verify their components.

Could you start by explaining the difference between AS6081 and AS6171 standards?

Baldyga: Certainly. AS6081 was primarily focused on providing a framework for distributors to detect and prevent counterfeit parts entering the supply chain, which is crucial for many industries such as defense systems, medical equipment, and automotive. AS6171, on the other hand, is more comprehensive. It includes detailed standardized test methods to authenticate electronic components, such as electrical testing, x-ray, and chemical analyses. Both standards addressed the need for defense companies to be able to buy authentic, non-traceable obsolete components in an era of rapidly increasing obsolescence in the semiconductor industry.

What influenced the shift from AS6081 to AS6171 and why is this year going to see an increase in requiring this standard?

Baldyga: The transition reflects a need for more robust verification processes. With counterfeiters becoming increasingly sophisticated, AS6171 offers more extensive risk-based testing methods. This change aims to bolster the integrity and security of the components used. Additionally, AS6171 aligns better with global standards, which is vital for companies operating internationally.

From your perspective, why is it important for customers to partner with an independent distributor that has invested in AS6171?

Baldyga: Partnering with a distributor that is accredited in AS6171, and by extension ISO 17025, is vital for several reasons. Firstly, it ensures that all components undergo the most rigorous verification processes available, significantly reducing the risk of counterfeit parts entering critical systems. Secondly, when combined with a robust supplier management program, the risks become highly manageable and the prospects of a 100% success rate in counterfeit detection and mitigation become both realistic and attainable. At Converge, we’ve made substantial financial investments in advanced testing equipment and training our staff to meet AS6171 standards. This not only demonstrates our commitment to quality but also provides our customers with confidence that their components are authentic and reliable.

What challenges might customers face with this transition, and how can Converge help?

Baldyga: The transition to AS6171 may present challenges such as increased operational costs, the requirement for new testing equipment, and the need to train personnel on the new standard. Customers may also experience supply chain disruptions as suppliers and subcontractors align with the updated requirements. At Converge, we’ve already navigated these challenges, so we can offer our expertise and infrastructure to support our customers through this transition. By partnering with us, they can leverage our investment and experience, ensuring a smoother and more cost-effective result.

Can you elaborate on the long-term benefits customers might see by complying with AS6171?

Baldyga: In the long run, compliance with AS6171 will enhance the overall integrity and security of defense and other critical systems. This not only reduces the risk of component failures but also strengthens national security. For customers, demonstrating compliance with such rigorous standards can enhance their reputation and competitive edge, particularly in the global market. It shows their commitment to quality and reliability, which is attractive to both the DoD and other high-reliability clients. Any highly successful counterfeit detection and mitigation program built around a standard such as AS6171 must also include highly effective supplier management, broad operational awareness throughout the organization as well have the financial stability and ability to grow, move, and lead the market with a zero-tolerance goal for counterfeit escapes. We encourage all customers to audit their suppliers in a detailed, goal-oriented manner on a regular basis to ensure they have a well-designed and highly developed program in place.

Thank you, Mark, for sharing your valuable insights. It’s clear that the transition to AS6171 is a significant step forward and partnering with an independent distributor like Converge can be highly beneficial.

Baldyga: You’re welcome. It’s an important topic, and I’m glad to have the opportunity to discuss it. Ensuring the reliability and authenticity of components is critical, and we’re here to support our customers every step of the way.
