Converge’s IT Asset Disposition Division Securely Disposes of 34 Tons of Obsolete IT and Electronics Equipment

Peabody, Mass., Oct. 17, 2007 — Converge, a leading independent distributor of electronic components and supply chain services, announced that its free computer “take back” event, sponsored by its IT asset disposition (ITAD) division on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007, helped securely recycle more than 34 tons of obsolete IT and electronics equipment from community residents.

The event, held at the company’s Peabody headquarters, collected enough IT equipment to fill three 53-foot tractor-trailers, diverting more than two tons of lead and significant quantities of hazardous chemicals such as mercury, arsenic and beryllium contained in these products from being disposed of in local landfills.

In less than four hours, NextPhase collected:

  • Nearly 500 CRT monitors
  • More than 425 desktop PCs and laptops
  • 189 printers
  • More than 700 other IT hardware and electronic items

“Secure and environmentally friendly destruction of IT assets for business is not optional; it is a necessity,” said Chris Adam, director of Converge's IT asset disposition division. “While the take back event exceeded our expectations, the amount we collected on Saturday is equivalent to what one midsize company may discard in just one year. This highlights not only the importance of companies properly disposing of IT assets, but also the necessity to ensure proper safeguarding and destruction of critical data to truly engage in secure IT asset disposal.”

All collected equipment from the event was securely destroyed and properly recycled by Converge, and each participant received a certificate of recycling.

With the company’s global presence and more than a quarter century of remarketing expertise, it can make sure its enterprise customers are compliant when disposing of obsolete electronic equipment, while also generating residual value, which in turn can help offset the processing costs. In 2006, Converge diverted more than 35 million pounds of excess, obsolete and retired electronic equipment from landfills.
